Yellow Jackets
Pest LibraryYellow jackets (german yellow jackets, sweat bees, ground wasps) are found worldwide, and are known to be aggressive insects that can cause allergic reactions with their stings. They are ravenous carnivores with an intense sweet tooth, building nests near areas with access to fruit, carbs, and/or sweet things like syrups and sodas. They’re often found around picnics, barbeques, and in backyards. They don’t stray further than around 1,000 feet from their nest, so if you see one, you can follow it to find it’s home base. However, BE CAREFUL! Yellow jackets are known to be extremely territorial – one sting might not do much damage, but many certainly can.
SIGNS OF A YELLOW JACKET INFESTATION
- seeing many small black and yellow insects that somewhat resemble bees/wasps
- seeing bee or wasp like insects that are nesting/flying close to the ground instead of higher up in the air
- seeing bee or wasp like insects that fly in a distinct side-to-side pattern before landing
Yellow jackets can be difficult to get rid of because of their behavior patterns. If you’re allergic to stinging insects, it’s recommended you avoid yellow jackets since their stings can cause allergic reactions.
