Termites
Pest LibraryEastern Subterranean termites are indigenous to Maryland and the surrounding areas. As the name implies, they tend to live underneath the soil in colonies similar to ant colonies. Termites are social insects with different termites fulfilling different roles. The termite that is most likely to be seen by a homeowner are the swarmers, or the ‘winged reproducers’. You can tell the difference between ants and termites by the antennae and wings – termite antenna resemble a string of beads, and termite wings are of identical size with veins throughout, making the wings cloudy in appearance. Termites feed off of wood and other cellulose-based materials, and are most likely to feed off of decaying wood matter. Termite prevention is key, as remediation can involve costly home repairs.
SIGNS OF A TERMITE INFESTATION INCLUDE:
- dirt tunnels built along foundations, exposed wood, or dangling from overhead. These are used as transit tubes from the colony to the food source.
- silvery wings left behind at entryways or left within spider webs
- evidence of structural damage, such as sagging floors
- dark or blistered areas on wood paneling signifying water damage left behind by termites as they feed
Prevention is key – make sure you remove any rotting or decaying wood left on the property, and avoid allowing untreated wood to sit outside while touching the home. Extensive damage is unlikely unless left untreated for many months, so if you notice signs of termites give us a call right away! We’ll investigate the property and come up with a pest control plan that works best for your home.
