Mice

In Maryland, the two most common types of mice you’ll find are house mice and deer mice. House mice are more common in urban areas, preferring to hide within the walls of commercial or residential buildings. These mice seek out warmth and are more likely to be nocturnal. Deer mice are found in more rural areas or areas with large, grassy fields, venturing inside to escape the cold. Deer mice are diurnal, meaning they come out during the day, so you’re more likely to see them scurrying around during the winter months. Mice can be very cute, but wild mice often carry diseases like salmonella, as well as harboring more nuisance pests like lice or fleas. Deer mice are also known carriers of Hantavirus, which can cause the sometimes-fatal Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome as well as Lyme disease.
