Crickets are small, nocturnal, herbivorous insects that can become omnivorous during periods of low food availability. A common misconception is that crickets and grasshoppers are the same – this is not the case! They are very similar, but crickets will not turn into locusts when starved like grasshoppers. Crickets are common prey insects for many predator insects, like spiders and centipedes, so keeping the cricket population on your property in control is key to managing those other insects.
SIGNS OF A CRICKET INFESTATION INCLUDE:
- Chewing damage on fabrics like silks, wool, nylon, cotton, or linen
- The distinctive chirping sound coming from within your home
- You’re seeing crickets in your home. They’re drawn to warm, moist areas of your home, so if you aren’t sure if you saw one, check in the spots they’re likely to set up camp (like crawlspaces)
