Carpenter Bees
Pest LibraryEastern Carpenter Bees are native to the East Coast, and are easily found in Maryland in the spring and summer. They are natural pollinators, but can cause damage to your wood-based structures if they aren’t maintained. Carpenter bees are very unlikely to sting, and they do not eat wood! Females drill into untreated, raw, or weathered wood (even if it’s stained) to create nests. One bee is unlikely to cause structural damage, but many bees can. Prevention is key! Keep an eye on your wood structures and maintain them – well maintained, painted wood is unlikely to be chosen by a carpenter bee. Because these bees are crucial pollinators and important to the environment they’re native to, trust a pest control company to help you remove any existing bees and prevent new ones from making your home theirs.
SIGNS YOU HAVE A CARPENTER BEE INFESTATION
- small piles of sawdust laying outside of a small, circular hole that appears to have been drilled into the wood
- sticky, yellow substance on the wood outside of the whole (this is a waste material made by the bee as she drills)seeing several large, shiny, mostly-black bees that can be mistaken as bumblebees flying around your home
Carpenter bees can cause structural damage to your home if there are many and they are left unchecked, but they do not cause major damage in the way termites do. Carpenter bees are also important pollinators for this reason, so if you’re noticing signs of an infestation, rely on the professionals at Bug Geeks Pest Control to find the extent of the infestation and treat it properly.
